Late May six of my MNN colleagues and I embarked on a new adventure. Academic and entrepreneurial in nature, this new adventure was called: a summer at Babson College.

Babson College Campus

We are more than half way through right now, so I guess it is about time to report about what Babson College is like. Located about 20 minutes away from Boston, in the beautiful and green Town of Wellesley, Babson College is an ideal campus for those who wish to concentrate on their studies.

Babson College welcome note, for us, the Tec de Monterrey students.

It will be difficult to summarize the lessons learned from Babson in just one blog post. Also, my own experience might also differ from that of my colleagues. However, there is one thing we all profited from: extraordinary professors and interesting courses.

I will give you an idea about my favorite courses at Babson this summer. First on the list would be “Marketing for Entrepreneurs” with Bob Caspe – an out-of-the-box marketing course designed especially for those who wish to open their small business. To any prospective entrepreneur, I would like to recommend Bob Caspe’s textbook that can be downloaded for a fee on his website. Like his course, the textbook is designed to help an entrepreneur understand how to build an effective marketing campaign for a small company: A smart and helpful collection of real world experiences and practical advice.

Other two courses on my favorites list were “Social Entrepreneurship” and “Public Policy Entrepreneurship” – two very insightful classes, about how to effectively apply entrepreneurship skills to social and political responsibilities. Some of the lessons learned here I would be more than happy to apply upon my return to Mexico.

Blog posts should be short. So I will stop here. But not before I tell you that if I was to summarize my Babson lessons learned, in the most concise way possible, I would say three things:

1. Entrepreneurship is all about the journey you embark on, about enjoying this journey as much as you can, and not (so much) about the money you make.
2. Even the smallest of all businesses deserves absolute attention and dedication. There are wonderful lifestyle businesses out there that deserve all the credit, because they are led by passionate people that love both life and business.
3. Always make an effort to give good presentations. Power Point is not the key. Once more, take Guy Kawasaki as an example. His entrepreneurial spirit is so much reflected in the way he talks, in the way he transmits his message. Business is so much about getting the message out there!

Hi MNN community!

I would like to share with you this video from Jeff Veen about his analysis of a great quote from Picasso “good artists copy, great artists STEAL”. What he tell us in this sketch is the difference when designers just “copy” a particular item believing that they will actually end up having as much success as the original one; but what they should really do is to UNDERSTAND what is the product and what is it made for.

He talks about a very interesting situation of South Pacific native communities were North Americans came when the WW II to fight against the Japanese army, and where they landed brought with them supplies and foods. Once the war was over, the Americans left and these natives wondered where all the food and goods went. So what they did was to “copy” the planes, weapons and situations they saw thinking that these actions will eventually bring them back all the goods, but in fact it didn’t. Veen talks about this is as a perfect example of how just copying a product without knowing what is for won’t lead you to great results.

Take a look at this video, it is very interesting!

Just as Newton’s laws of Inertia, Acceleration and Reaction, marketing should be pursued through these three factors to generate a positive customer response.

Such as Inertia, conversation about a brand or a product remains at rest if no one talks about it. Conversation in motion tends to continue in motion as long as people are talking about it.

Acceleration law in Word of Mouth Marketing is about the relativity of how much force and effort is needed with the size of a brand. The bigger it is, the more force you’ll need to provoke people to generate an opinion.

Finally, Reaction law says that for every action there is a reaction, and in Marketing is nothing but an adequate business response for every customer action. For adequate business response John Moore refers to when a business reacts quickly and individually to customer requests.

Our program Director shared with us some time ago a video from Dan Gilbert about how happiness is nothing but a constant and what we do is to synthesize it so we can feel happier or sadder when something happens. Gilbert demonstrate us in his video how different circumstances in which you have the opportunity to reversible actions (and we normally want all things to be reversible), automatically you end up feeling sad about decisions. In contrast, when you are facing with irreversible decisions, you force yourself to feel happy with what you decide because there is no way back, incredible!

Since we seem to handle happiness so well, we as entrepreneurs should be able to use that ability and bring out our strongest feeling of happiness whenever some obstacle comes between us and our business goals.

Entrepreneurs should use this power for sure, since the road is a non-stop crusade of ups and downs, and it’s the persistence, the constant motivation, and the wish of fulfilling your own dreams what keeps you going.

<a href="
A final video I leave you so you can use it whenever you feel down and the situation does not seem to get any better. It’s about some men about to be killed by crucifixion and how they sing to always look “on the bright side of life”!! If they can sing it in such a crucial and threatening situation, so can we if some problem comes ahead!

I share with you a very interesting video from Sir Ken Robinson about how we are normally trained to never be wrong (and we actually think we will pay a very high price if we do make a mistake), but yet sometimes, this particular event “limits” our creativity.

As we more and more wish to deliver better ideas, better projects and flawless performances all the time, our error tolerance becomes smaller and our disappointment could become bigger. Robinson says “if you are not prepared to be wrong, you will never come up with something original”. I think it is a very interesting insight to keep in mind and to practice as well.

Just as little kids are always wondering, asking, trying, CREATING, so should we, but it seems that sometimes we forget this type of things along the way…

Don’t miss this video, it also shows some other insights from Robinson about the school programs and the lack of creativity as a repercusion from some teaching techniques.

Thanks to Dr. Jorge Gómez, one of our MNN professors, for sharing this video with us!
